Absolutely nobody comes out of this well.

The Irish FA are wrong for hanging their arse out to anyone who’s ever eaten a spud. Coming over her trawling for Irish links is desperate.

The English FA should have left him to it once he’d played for a Ireland. I don’t want to see a player wearing the England shirt when he’s already stood for a National anthem that speaks of slaying England. It’s ridiculous.

Rice is wrong because once you’ve played for a country, that should be it. Forget all that bollocks about being young. It’s not like he’s stole a loaf of bread in 17th century London. He just made a decision that will mean he earns a bit less in endorsements. He should have to live with that consequence.

Re: Deccers chooses...
Thing is no matter what he did people would disagree with his decision. Say he becomes a top top player and in a few years England could have done with him and Ireland achieved very little some people would say that he was an idiot not to choose England when he had the chance. He couldn't really win either way.

However the rules need to be changed.

Just listening to a radio show in Ireland and Gary Breen ( in his broad London accent) whilst claiming I am Irish is getting rather irate again over Declan. Funny thing is the presenter doesn’t agree with him

Re: Deccers chooses...
Declan may have made the wrong decision in the first place deciding to play for Ireland but have some loyalty. You’ve made your bed now lie in it. I think if he had of said after playing under 21s I want to wait for England it would be different but taking 3 senior caps then changing your mind. It’s wrong. When Tottenham or Chelsea come calling he will go. No integrity

Lertie,

He list John Terry as his idol.

Probably Chelsea bound eventually.

My main issue is that if John Terry is advising you on anything other than shop lifting then you are probably asking the wrong person.
On a purely esthetic level, Declan McRice (The English man) is a teensy weensy bit too Neanderthal to be an Irish man

Gilmore,

I understand that but there is still something a bit unethical about a scout going to England to identify 16 year olds to get them to play for another country. Ireland should put money and time into developing youngsters in their own country.

I do agree that this International rule is fucking stupid but England has been a victim of it with Zaha as well.

If Declan had committed to Ireland I would have said fair play to the lad but I am not that bothered either way as I just care what he does for West Ham while it seems like there will now be a few Irish Hammers on here who will let their Nationality bias/pride alter their judgement on Rice when he plays for West Ham whereas before you all loved him.

Swindon

when they play at underage level, they know they are not tied to a Country,

Switching after playing Senior seems wrong. But now it's open to Ireland to do the same.

There has been a campaign by some Countries to FIFA to allow Nationality transfer after competitive caps. Resisted so far, but I imagine it's only a matter of time.

So you could have the likes of Harry Kane switching to say Spain, if they looked like having a WC winning team.

Re: Deccers chooses...
Norman,

All of those you mentioned said no to Ireland because they were good enough at an early age that they got called up to the England under age teams.

Rice was released by Chelsea at 14/15 and was obviously not on England's radar at a younger age so when Ireland called he thought it would be good for his profile to play international football.

I am pretty sure if England had contacted him at the same time as Ireland did he would have chosen to play for England at youth level.

I don't agree with the ruling that you can play in friendlies and then switch nationalities but Wilfred Zaba did it without half the fuss that this has caused and it's well known that Mick McCarthy is trying to convince Nathan Redmond who has one friendly cap for England, born in England and played for England at all levels to switch to Ireland.

If Ireland are intent on having a full time scout based in England who's job it is to identify and try and persuade 16 year olds with an Irish grandparent to play for Ireland at youth level then you can't be surprised when they get older and the time comes to make a decision that they choose the country of their birth.

Deccers?

Re: Deccers chooses...
Players born In England that would be good enough for England

Paul McGrath born in Ealing but grew up in Dublin. David O’Leary born in London grew up in Dublin also

Another one they that would of qualified is Rio Ferdinand.

So all these players like Rooney, Kane, Cahill, Rio, Noble etc all said no.

Rice said yes and played at every age level got 3 senior caps. England had a good World Cup and he gets a phone call from Southgate then suddenly changes his mind. Even after kissing the bag, saying it’s the proudest moment of his life to play for Ireland then changes his mind. The rule is wrong but him to do that is also wrong. The man has no class or morals neither does his agent. Can’t seeing being at our club more than one more year

Which English-born players who turned out for Ireland would've been good enough for a regular spot in the England team, do you reckon?

I would suggest only John Aldridge, for a season or two.

I wish him well. I would support him in either shirt as many English/Irish people would do.

Re: Deccers chooses...
I don’t think Declan Rice will need to take advice on when to leave and whether or not to leave.

If he continues to progress as he is and gets into the England set up too then he willl naturally want to win things further down the line. If we improve as a team then that could be with us, but I think most footballers would at least be tempted if the likes of Man City and Liverpool start showing interest,

The good thing is that he is still very young and seemingly quite level headed so he may feel that he wants to spend the next 4/5 years with us, continuing to learn his trade and develop. He still needs to maintain his form too, of course.
